minifrontpage thumbnail picture quality

Hi,

Thank you for such a good module.

I have two questions regarding the thumbnail's.

- In the module i set the thumbnail size as 150x100 but all my thumbnail's are still 206x137
- The picture quality of the thumbnails are not good, they are blurry despite that the original picture
is much bigger and better in quality. Is there anything that i can do to get a better quality thumbnail?

Regards,

Aydin

    Hi,
    1. Please make sure you have deleted all thumbnail images under the folder images/thumbnail/mod_minifrontpage everytime you change the thumbnail settings, so the thumbnail will be re-generated
    https://www.dropbox.com/s%2F0w7naom7zdsleds%2FMonosnap%25202020-07-27%252007-13-11.png?raw=1

    2.
    - The picture quality of the thumbnails are not good, they are blurry despite that the original picture
    I think it's because the module trying to create the generated images that is bigger then the original. Please see this :
    - original image http://ttfweb.ttf.org.tr/images/assets/images/news/28515/news-detail-3ffc7efa-3076-457e-b453-84725c8708a2.jpeg
    - generated thumbnail http://ttfweb.ttf.org.tr/images/assets/images/news/28515/news-detail-3ffc7efa-3076-457e-b453-84725c8708a2.jpeg

    Try to change 150x100 to 206x137 or 300x200 and see whether the thumbnail image is still blurry or not.

    3. Additionally, you can also try to increase the image quality by editing this file ../modules/mod_minifrontpage/Helper/MinifrontpageHelper.php

    at lines 227 you will see this code :
    if($file_ext == 'png'){
    					$imagetype = IMAGETYPE_PNG;
    					$quality	= '7';
    					$file_ext = 'png';
    				}elseif($file_ext == 'gif'){
    					$imagetype = IMAGETYPE_PNG;
    					$quality	= '7';
    					$file_ext = 'png';
    				} else {
    					$imagetype = IMAGETYPE_JPEG;
    					$quality	= '70';
    					$file_ext = 'jpg';

    try to change it to
    if($file_ext == 'png'){
    					$imagetype = IMAGETYPE_PNG;
    					$quality	= '9';
    					$file_ext = 'png';
    				}elseif($file_ext == 'gif'){
    					$imagetype = IMAGETYPE_PNG;
    					$quality	= '9';
    					$file_ext = 'png';
    				} else {
    					$imagetype = IMAGETYPE_JPEG;
    					$quality	= '90';
    					$file_ext = 'jpg';

    But please note, by increasing the image quality above, it will add an additional load to your server once when generating thumbnail

    I tried to modify the MinifrontpageHelper.php file
    the image in the article is almost same size as the thumbnail.
    In the article the quality is perfect, the thumbnail is blurry
    Changing the quality settings to 90 didn't change a thing

    Hi seppe,
    the image in the article is almost same size as the thumbnail.
    are you sure none of width or height is bigger than actual image size? Can you share your website url?
    • seppe155 - one week ago
      Yes
      there is no width or height added in the code.
      I guess the image has a size of 200x200
      the default thumbnailsize is 65x65 I believe
      I checked in other browsers, cleared cache, checked again.... no progress

    And since the 5 boxed are of different sizes if we set the width and height to one image won't that affect the others of smaller sizes?

    Hello, no they are not, it still very blurry

    Have you tried to clear your browser caches? becuase as my previous screenshot, the thumbnail is good from here.
    i'am getting a blank page now after chagng the image of an article and deleting the thumbnail files.

    Hmm what size you use for width and height? It's probably you're setting the width and height to high and so it takes too much resource to generate a lot of thumbnail at once.
    There, and when i change the image in an article, it does not get updated in the module.
    If you update the image then you need to delete the thumbnail images in the folder : images/thumbnails/mod_minifrontpage /pro. This is designed like to make the module doesn't take server resource too much (not generating thumbnail every page load)

      It was at these same values when you checked it the first time, i don' know why it went blank.

    Hello, it was looking better on the minifrontpage module for joomla articles, but i've decided to go with the module for k2 with the same parameters but the images are still all blurry.
    • admin - one week ago
      The module for K2 has the same codebase with the joomla article one, so what you did previously with joomla article version is likely will work with k2 version too.
      ANyway, I'd suggest you to do these :
      1. Delete all of thumbnails files in the images/thumbnails/mod_minifrontpagepro (if you install minifrontpage pro) or images/thumbnails/mod_minifrontpage (if you install minifrontpage) everytime you change the thumbnail setting, so the module can generate the new thumbnails.
      2. When refreshing browser, don't forget to clear your browser cache
      3. You can try to clear your joomla cache too

    Hi, talla,
    I have entered to your administrator and looks like the problem is because the generated thumbnail size is bigger than the original image. It's zoomed up.

    Please have a look on this article :
    http://www.pmu.ml/2/component/k2/item/5-eid-mubarak

    This is the image for this article :
    http://www.pmu.ml/2/media/k2/items/cache/ffee2447b152494b43d9816faaea83c8_XL.jpg?t=20200808_025038
    The dimension for this image is : 900x499 px

    And this is the generated thumbnail for that :
    https://pmu.ml/2/images/thumbnails/mod_minifrontpageprok2/5_137.jpg
    The dimension for the thumbnail is : 900x600

    See, the height of the generated thumbnail is bigger than the original images, that's why the image is blurry because the module trying to generate thumbnail that is bigger than the original size. It zoom up the original image first and then crop it.

    Maybe you're confused because you have set the thumbnail size to 300x200. The answer is it because technically the module will generated 3 times bigger thumbnail because you have retina setting = 3x that will multiply the size into three times = 900x600

    And because you use the full width collage themes (the image will automatically fit the browser width) you will notice the blur.

    My suggestion for you case is, please try to always use a HD quality image everytime you post an article with bigger or at least have standard HD dimension (1024x768px) so the module won't trying to generate a bigger dimension / zoom up.

    Other suggestion is, maybe you can try to lower the thumbnail size into 250X160 so the module will generate a 750x480 thumbnail image (smaller then the original one), and let see the result.

      I did exactly as suggested and tried the suggested width and height, i always remove the thumbnail files before updation the module setting but still the same blurry images, the original images are also HD standard. Thank for your help.

    Hi seppe,
    it looks like thumbnail size (ratio) you set is bigger than your original image so the module will try to generate a bigger image that blurry. Please have a look on this :
    https://www.dropbox.com/s%2Ff5h5c4ev1xntctf%2FMonosnap%25202020-08-09%252008-23-15.png?raw=1
    My suggestion is try to decrease width and height settings or use a bigger image dimension (HD) everytime you make a new post

    Hi @seppe155 Minifrontpage uses the default joomla image processing function to generate the thumbnail. If you think the image still blurry, try to increase the thumbnail size but don't make it bigger than the original image. Please also note that there is size multiplier (for mini frontpage the value is 3x) that will multiply the thumbnail size value, so when you enter thumbnail width size is 100, the module is actually trying to generate 100x3 = 300px thumbnail.
    Basically to get best thumbnail quality as you wish, please do trial and error for the thumbnail size.

    Hi @seppe155 and @talla I will lock this thread because the conversation on this thread is becoming too long and probably will annoy the original poster as he will get email notification everytime you guys post an answer on this thread.
